Carey Oakes was the first female lift apprentice in the UK and has since gone on to work in the lift and escalator industry for 27 years as an engineer/service manager and consultant.

This experience has allowed her to see the operational challenges faced by both the service provider and the end user/client. It has given Carey an insight into the expectations of all the stakeholders involved with vertical transportation across the various sectors, which allows her to provide the best advice possible.

Carey started her career in the lift industry at Otis in 1990 as an apprentice and then went on to qualify as an engineer, staying with Otis until 2000. She then started at Schindler as a Lead Engineer, then progressing to become a Technician, followed by becoming a Service Manager, looking after 11 engineers across a huge area on both lifts and escalators. With extensive knowledge and experience in the lift industry, Carey then went on to work for a lift consultancy between 2010 and 2013 as their northern consultant.

In 2014, she became Escalator Service Manager for the North and Scotland looking after all the Escalators across a wide range of sectors, including Schindler’s single biggest maintenance contract, Network Rail.

Carey has a variety of qualifications including, HNC/HND in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, NVQ4 Testing and Commissioning of Lifts, City and Guild 201 parts 1 and 2 Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, CSCS Managerial card.
