What we commonly get asked…

As independent lift and escalator consultants, we regularly get asked the following questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, feel free to get in touch to ask a member of our team.

What is an emergency LOLER inspection?

An emergency LOLER inspection is a prompt Thorough Examination arranged when lift compliance has lapsed or a specific safety concern needs urgent assessment. It is focused on confirming whether the lift is safe to continue in service and what immediate actions are required.

When is an emergency LOLER inspection needed?

It is typically needed when the LOLER Certificate re-examination date has been missed or imminently due to expire, a lift has been taken out of service and needs a compliant route back into use, or when a reported issue raises safety concerns that should be assessed without delay.

How quickly can an emergency LOLER inspection be arranged?

Timing depends on location, access, and engineer availability, but the service is intended for urgent situations. Providing lift details and site access information early helps speed up attendance and reduce delays.

What is the difference between an emergency LOLER inspection and a routine LOLER Thorough Examination?

There is essentially no difference between a standard LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) inspection and an emergency LOLER inspection.
The term “emergency” is specifically used to describe situations where there is an immediate and pressing need for inspection services to be carried out. This typically arises when there may be a safety concern or operational requirements that require a thorough assessment of lift equipment.

Can you carry out an emergency LOLER inspection after an incident or entrapment?

Yes. After an incident or entrapment, an urgent Thorough Examination can be arranged to assess safety, identify any defects, and confirm whether the lift can return to service, needs restrictions, or must remain shut down until repairs are completed.

What information do you need before attending (lift details, last LOLER date, site access)?

Useful information includes lift type and location, number of stops and any key access constraints, the last LOLER date and any recent reports, known faults or events prompting the request, and practical access arrangements such as keys, permits, machine room access, and an on site contact.

What happens if the lift has no valid LOLER certificate?

If there is no valid Thorough Examination Certificate in place, the lift should not be operated until the required examination is completed and any safety critical defects are addressed. An emergency inspection can establish the lift’s status and set out actions needed to restore compliance.

Will you issue a report or certificate after an emergency LOLER inspection?

Yes, you should receive the Thorough Examination documentation, including findings, defect classifications where applicable, and clear actions required, along with confirmation of any restrictions or whether the lift is safe to remain in service.

What outcomes can I expect (return to service, restrictions, immediate shutdown)?

Possible outcomes include the lift being confirmed safe to continue in service, safe to operate with restrictions, or required to be taken out of service if serious defects are found. The report will set out any timescales for remedial actions and what must be completed before normal operation resumes.

What types of lifts can you inspect under emergency LOLER (passenger, goods, platform, service lifts)?

Emergency LOLER Thorough Examinations can typically be carried out on a wide range of lifting equipment used for people and goods, including passenger lifts, goods lifts, service lifts, and platform lifts, subject to safe access and the specific equipment configuration.
