What we commonly get asked…
As independent lift and escalator consultants, we regularly get asked the following questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, feel free to get in touch to ask a member of our team.
How much does a lift condition survey cost?
When it comes to lift condition surveys, the costs can vary based on several key factors, such as the number of lifts you want to be surveyed, their type and age, where they’re located, and how much detail goes into the final report.
If you’re interested in a lift condition survey, ILECS is ready to offer you a customised quotation that precisely meets your requirements. We are committed to providing the most accurate and tailored estimate to ensure you receive the best service possible.
When would I need a lift condition survey?
When your lift approaches the 15-year mark, it’s a great time to consider conducting a lift condition survey. This pivotal milestone signals that you should start planning for either modernisation, refurbishment or replacement. If you’ve been experiencing frequent issues with your lift, a condition survey can help identify the root causes of these problems. Taking this proactive step not only ensures that your lift continues to operate safely and efficiently but also empowers you to make well-informed decisions about its future. Keeping your lift in good condition is not just about maintenance, it’s about peace of mind and smart planning!
How can I reduce the frequency of lift breakdowns?
In the UK, lifts typically experience an average of four breakdowns per year. However, it is important to note that this statistic does not mean each lift will break down four times every year.
To minimise the occurrence of breakdowns, it is essential to implement regular servicing and inspections, as well as to ensure that the door tracks are clear and unobstructed.
Lifts are mechanical and electrical systems that require proper care and maintenance to avoid misuse and ensure longevity.
How do you know when a lift has reached the end of its useful life?
The average lifespan of a lift is between 15 and 20 years, assuming it has been installed correctly, well-maintained with quality equipment, and cared for by its users. Lifts that are over 15 years old may face a shortage of spare parts and technical support, which can lead to more extended downtimes in the event of a breakdown.
How do I know if my lift is being serviced properly?
A well-maintained lift is key to ensuring reliability and safety. To ensure your lift is being maintained properly, pay attention to signs like cleanliness, up-to-date service log cards, and thorough service records from your lift contractor.
If you have any concerns about your lift’s maintenance, don’t hesitate to reach out to ILECS. We can carry out a detailed maintenance audit and provide you with an in-depth report on the quality of service you’re receiving.
What will an asset overview report from ILECS tell me?
An asset overview report provides a clear, easy-to-understand snapshot of your lift’s condition, using a traffic light system to highlight key areas. It also outlines the lift’s remaining lifespan and offers indicative budget costs for modernisation or replacement. This helps you plan effectively for capital expenditure and ensure your lift remains reliable and compliant.
What is LOLER?
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, commonly referred to as LOLER, are essential regulations in the UK that focus on the safety and maintenance of lifting equipment. LOLER requires duty holders to ensure that their lifting equipment is safe to use, properly marked, and regularly inspected by a competent person.
What’s the difference between a LOLER inspection and an emergency LOLER inspection?
There is essentially no difference between a standard LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) inspection and an emergency LOLER inspection.
We use the term “emergency” to describe situations where there is an immediate and pressing need for a LOLER inspection to be carried out urgently. This typically arises when the LOLER inspector is unable to attend or the lift is out of service at the time of their visit, and they are unable to return to complete the inspection at short notice.
In such cases, an emergency LOLER inspection can be commissioned to ensure the continued safety and compliance of lifting operations.
What if my lift doesn’t have a valid LOLER certificate?
Operating a lift without the necessary certification would be a violation of legal requirements under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998. Therefore, it is imperative that a lift without a valid LOLER certificate be isolated and refrained from use until a valid certificate is obtained. Failure to produce a valid LOLER certificate in the event of an incident could lead to serious ramifications, so it is crucial to adhere to these regulations and uphold safety standards and compliance.
If you’re unsure if your lift needs a LOLER certificate, read our LOLER inspections vs. Lift Inspections blog for clarification.
Is my lift energy efficient?
Modern lifts tend to be increasingly energy efficient, with features designed to save and regenerate energy during operation. Many older lifts will not include these energy-saving features; however, energy efficiency can still be improved through partial modernisation with new efficient equipment.
There are also ways to immediately improve the energy efficiency of your lift through simple steps, such as by replacing tungsten or halogen bulbs with LED types.
At ILECS, we can help you identify the best methods to improve the efficiency of your lift or escalator.
