When should I modernise a lift instead of repairing it or replacing it?

Modernisation is often right when the lift structure is sound but faults are increasing, parts are becoming obsolete, compliance improvements are needed, or performance and energy use need improvement. Replacement can be better if the lift is end of life, the shaft and car arrangement must change, or long term lifecycle cost favours a new lift.
