For the past four years, ILECS has partnered with The Southbank Centre in London to overhaul its lift systems, transforming the reliability of all 32 lifts in its portfolio. Together, we are ensuring that every lift provides a seamless and efficient experience for all users.

This exciting project has included our complete range of innovative solutions, including Insight, Navigate, Enhance, and OneVision. Read on to discover how each solution plays a vital role in providing successful lift management.

Client Background

The Southbank Centre is the largest arts centre in the UK and one of the nation’s top visitor attractions. Spanning 11 acres, it features several venues, including the Royal Festival Hall, the Hayward Gallery, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Purcell Room, along with outdoor areas for events and relaxation.

The Challenge

ILECS’ lift consultancy services were recommended to The Southbank Centre after they recognised the importance of acquiring a comprehensive understanding of their lifts.

At the time of first contacting us, lift reliability was an increasing issue and some lifts on site were reaching the end of their intended design life. Due to the varying nature of the events held within The Southbank Centre and extremely high number of daily visitors it was evident a complete overview of the lifts within their portfolio was required to support their capital expenditure (CapEx) plan effectively.

The Solution

After gaining full clarity and understanding of our client’s needs, we recommended that they sign up to our OneVision lift management service and have a comprehensive asset overview for each lift in the portfolio.

By onboarding to OneVision, one of our specialist account managers could take control of the portfolio and collate the necessary information needed to work directly with lift contractors and keep any expenditure to a minimum.

Asset overview reports would provide crucial information about the age, condition, and compliance of installed equipment, along with expert recommendations, budget estimates for future work, and the remaining estimated lifespan.

These combined services would give our client the insight needed to make informed decisions and strategically allocate its resources for maximum impact.

The Outcome

In 2021, ILECS received a work order to provide OneVision lift management and a comprehensive asset overview for each lift in the portfolio. Our experienced lift consultant, Patrick Garrity, took the lead on this project, and after completing asset overviews, he compiled an asset lifecycle programme based on the findings. The asset lifecycle programme highlighted any critical concerns and presented The Southbank Centre with a long-term plan for the overhaul of each lift, first addressing the priority lifts and then working on the lifts which offered better reliability.

Since then, ILECS has provided phased full design duties for eleven lift modernisations, four lift replacements, and the installation of a new platform lift serving a newly constructed kitchen area. ILECS are also continuing to work alongside a design team to procure and install a brand new external lift to improve step free access to the riverside area of the site.

Moving Forward

Following substantial investment via a phased approach to lift modernisation and replacements over the past 5 years, The Southbank Centre recently instructed ILECS to produce and tender a new lift maintenance contract with the view to maintaining long-term, reliable lift operation. ILECS continue to provide our OneVision service and day-to-day support as required by the client.
